Memory 10 (won Day 35, taken Day 35)

Significant-Negative: Ryuuji's illness.

Details: Won in Nyssa's shadow game.

Set during the Isa Souma-era. While the memory itself consists of a single moment, the general time period it falls under is described below:

His last moments were dreadfully anticlimactic.
He fell ill with a disease endemic to the island.
By the time we returned home, he was so emaciated one could barely recognize him.

He had watched as many other birds succumbed to disease.
So I was sure.
Sure that he would die in this examination room, surrounded by his family.

So this memory consists of Shuu in a small hospital room, with Ryuuji - a terribly emaciated and ill Ryuuji - in bed, surrounded by medical equipment. Shuu dutifully tells him how his disease as progressed (exactly as expected; which is to say, worse). Ryuuji tries to say something cheerful and ends up coughing terribly and Shuu has to call a nurse. The nurse leaves once Ryuuji is okay and Shuu sits by his bedside, flicking through research notes, reading up on the disease. Ryuuji is asleep, with only the horrible rasping of his breath to tell Shuu he's still alive.

Results:
- WHY IS RYUUJI SICK
- WHY CAN'T HE BE CURED
- WHY IS THIS HAPPENING
- WHY AM I SO FULL OF FEELINGS
- And, more seriously, despite his outward calm there is an internal turmoil of grief/despair/frustration at the fact that Ryuuji is dying, the fact that Ryuuji is even sick. The fact that he already knows how this is going to go, how Ryuuji is going to die. The fact that Shuu can't do anything at all to help him.

(Fun fact: Shuu's specialty was pathology, the study and diagnosis of disease.)
